Myself and my 3 roomies headed to the Slut Walk last weekend. It was a wonderful experience, and I’m so glad we took part. But, something scary happened. On one of the streets we walked down, several different men (they weren’t together) shouted into the crowd of people marching. One man yelled “I was raped” in a joking way. A women in the walk responded with “That’s not funny.” He got mad and his body language was very aggressive, he yelled a few more things and finished with “Yeah, keep walking, that’s what I thought.” The other man who was standing in the doorway of a strip club declared “You’re all hired!”
I didn’t say anything. I felt like they didn’t deserve a response. But I’m glad one woman said something. This was the first time I’ve ever felt scared for my safety with so many people around me. One of the worst things is that 2 of my roommates are from out-of-state. This was the first time they’ve really been in Baltimore, and they made a bad impression. Before going to Slut Walk I thought the event was important for political reasons. Now I see how important it is for physical safety reasons too.
